I want to thank San, K5YY for posting this analysis on the blog. I would also like to thank Tom, DF2BO – and others in EU, Scandinavia and “Western EU” for their helpful input. I am forwarding ALL of these requests to the team.
I want to assure you that the Team will continue to try ALL modes for EU – but if we get to a point where its “something or nothing” – we might try emphasizing CW. My amplifier died just before XR0ZR went on the air, and the pileups have been huge and with callers stomping on top of everyone. I got them on 12 and 30M CW, and have been completely shut out on 40M SSB – even with phased vertical arrays. The problem – 100 watts vs. 500 watts on SSB does make a noticeable difference, wheras, 100 watts on CW has no problem slipping in between the other set of 1.5 KW callers. I have experienced this over and over in my DX-ing career. If I only ran 100 watts, I would put my microphone away.
Sans analysis is so interesting – I am promoting it to a Blog post. What I like most is that this is a Scientific hobby, and Science trumps emotion. And in my pursuit of Honor Roll, I learned that one huge roadblock that I had was solved by Science, and not Seance. You can see my QRZ.COM for details on that. So, without further adieu, here is some interesting Science:
Rich: Here is some data % for you and the team. You must consider that the LONGER distance QSOs (T33 to EU versus to AS or USA) favor the CW mode with it’s 17dB increase in signal strength over SSB and RTTY.
Point : % of AS SSB QSOs from ALL their QSOs = 32 %
% of USA SSB QSO s from all USA QSOs = 29.9 %
% of EU SSB Qs from the EU QSO totals = 14.6 %
EU CW signals get thru QRM and QRN better with the decrease propagation intensity
% of AS CW QSOs from the AS totals = 56 %
% of USA CW Qs from the totals = 65.8 %
and % EU CW Qs from their total QSO # = 80.6 % !!!
This all points out that CW gets thru better from each area due to the published CW dB gain over SSB and RTTY. Then, factor in the propagation distances and signal losses for the LONG haul QSOs, and you then have EU being less on OVERALL QSO totals. These are NOT unexpected results.
The team is playing propagation pretty well in my opinion, and CW is the mode for the EU DXers to concentrate on and perhaps for the T33A team to work on in trying to work more EU.. It is a bit much for EU to think that the # of SSB QSOs would ever come close equaling the CW %… The same figures are reversed when you see AS and USA % on DXpeditions to Africa or EU when compared to the EU % on those “close in” DXpeditions. Maybe the team will try a bit more CW these last 3 days. Overall, a great job on providing T33, albeit on CW mainly.. Not all places in the world will work T33 on BOTH SSB and CW. The dB factor favors CW to ALL continents. The data above proves it.
